view Catala World Atlas 1375
Catala World Atlas 1375

Catala Atlas or Catalan Word Atlas, also known as Portolan Chart or Portolan Atlas,
made by Abraham Cresques (1325–1387), whose real name was Cresques (son of) Abraham, was a 14th-century Jewish cartographer from Palma, Majorca (then part of the Crown of Aragon).

The atlas originally is 6 vellum leaves folded down the middle in many colours also with gold and silver. Now these pages are cut in half of about 65 x 50 cm. The total work was 65 cm x 3mtr.
This type of map known as a portulan, indirectly formed the basis of modern maritime cartography.

The Catalan Atlas, dated 1375 and attributed to Cresques Abraham, presents important similarities with Dulcert's portolan chart in the drawing of its occidental portion,

augmented with a great number of explanatory legends. Its originality lies in the addition of an oriental half which is not based on the experience of Mediterranean sailors,

as was the case with portolan charts, but makes use of all manner of sources, including the account of Marco Polo's voyage in the late thirteenth century.

In the first part of the Galician-Portuguese period (from the 12th to the 14th century), the language was increasingly used for documents and other written forms.

There are two versions of the Catala Map: one in France and once in Madrid.  The Madrid version is a copy.

These pages are made with the aid of:
